Girl With the Fake Pearl Earring

'When I was researching images of the working women of Sheffield for my “Herd of Sheffield” piece, I came across a photo of a group of buffer girls, proud and resplendent in their work clothes and headscarves. Looking more closely, I noticed this girl in the corner of the picture in a world of her own, young yet world-weary. What struck me most was how she resembled Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring”, even down to the earring. I couldn’t resist doing my own homage to Vermeer and to the working women of Sheffield.'
