The Outsider
Description
Created for Pete's 2022 Don't Adjust Your Mindset exhibition this painting is a self-portrait of Pete as a young boy. To date, this is only the second self-portrait the artist has exhibited. Pete draws on childhood memories of waiting outside a bookies whilst his dad placed a bet on the horses. The work was inspired by the artist’s reflections on how today’s betting industry glamourises gambling. Adverts online and on TV often employ celebrities to endorse their products.
“Although making your child wait outside a betting shop while you go in exposes them to gambling on some level, in many ways today’s betting culture is much more damaging [...] it seems to pervade our lives in a far more insidious way.”
