Gilded Lily
Description
This work was created for Pete's 2022 Don't Adjust Your Mindset exhibition. The way in which the artist has painted older people in this show was a departure for him. A figure Pete regularly revisits is the archetypal grandmother, “the matriarch of the house”. He has also described her as symbolising empathy, offering a “great warmth” that is intended to provide comfort and evoke loving memories.
Gilded Lily playfully subverts this familiar character by imagining how older people might look in the future, based on today’s styles and forms of expression. Here a millennial or someone from the Generation Z era, gazes directly at the viewer, holding up their arm to proudly display their body art, their ears stretched by the plugs they once wore. The matriarchs Pete regularly paints are the ones he remembers growing up; the woman in this painting allows us a glimpse into the future.
