Let's pay homage to the nans, grans, aunts, nanas, gigis, nonnas, neenas, queenies, bubbes, bibis, babushkas, omas, abuelitas and grandmothers of our worlds. They only want what’s best for us.
Family has always been important to the artist, particularly the maternal figure in the family. To emphasise the celebration of the matriarch, when exhibited this work was displayed as part of an installation that emulated a shrine. The floral arch that surrounded the painting is based on the shrines known as ofrendas created during the Mexican Day of the Dead festival in which people pay respect to their loved ones by surrounding their photos with flowers, food, drink and other gifts to celebrate their lives and to perpetuate their memory.
